Man recounts terrifying 1974 flood at Nelson’s Landing

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A terrifying storm struck Nevada in 1974 and no one saw it coming. It happened about 50 miles southeast of Las Vegas.

A flash flood swept through Eldorado Canyon destroying everything in its path and creating a disaster of epic proportions.

“September the 14th. It was a beautiful day in September. Very strange because it wasn’t crowded there. I expected a lot of people because it was so nice weather-wise,” said John Gellifent, victim’s friend.

There was a dark cloud seen miles away. But, at Nelson’s Landing — the sun was oddly shining.

“I spent a lot of time out at the lake years and years ago in the late 60s and 70s and never saw anything like that anywhere. No,” Gellifent said.

Texas billionaire Ross Perot dies

DALLAS (AP) — H. Ross Perot, the colorful, self-made Texas billionaire who twice ran for president, has died.

Family spokesman James Fuller says Perot died early Tuesday. He was 89.

Perot rose from Depression-era poverty to become one of the nation’s richest men as the founder of computer services giant Electronic Data Systems Corp.

In 1992, Perot jumped into the presidential campaign as an independent candidate, challenging President George H.W. Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton.

Perot drew nearly 19% of the vote, the biggest percentage for a third-party hopeful in 80 years. Republicans blamed him for Bush’s defeat.

Vegas home values rise in June

Las Vegas home value are on the rise again, following three months of holding steady, according to a new report from the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors.

The GLVAR reports the average price for a home sold in the are in June was $304,000. That’s up 4.8% from 290,000 in June of 2018. The price of condos and townhomes increased at a greater rate – 6.5% – to $177,900.

A decrease in the number of sales led to the price hike.

“It’s normal for home prices and sales to increase this time of year,” said 2019 GLVAR President Janet Carpenter. “Overall, I think the takeaway from this month’s GLVAR report is that the local housing market is surprisingly stable. In fact, this is probably as stable as the local housing market has been in nearly two decades.” ... Read More

Local teacher shares story of survival after boating accident

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – You’d never know from her contagious smile and laugh that Leslie Burns just lost her leg.

Last week, Burns was pulled underneath a boat at Lake Mead just as the engine was starting.

“I get to be bionic,” Burns laughed. “I get to still do everything I can do and it’s not going to hold me back.”

Now, it’s the little things that brighten Burns’ day.

“Today, I was able to stand up and go in a walker which was amazing,” she said.

Burns is an English teacher at Foothill High School. In her hospital room at University Medical Center, the cards and balloons remind her how loved she really is.

“This incident is going to make me grateful for every little moment you have,” Burns added. “I kind of went into, my friends call it, teacher mode. I went into survivor mode.”... Read More

Shooting leaves 1 dead near LV Strip

LAS VEGAS (KLAS-TV) – One person is dead after a shooting near the Las Vegas strip.

Metro Police located a victim that was suffering from a gunshot wound at Paradise Road and East Twain Avenue around 7:45 p.m.

The shooting victim was later transported to Sunrise Trauma and died of the injuries, according to investigators.

The shooting suspect is still at-large.

Fire damages Charleston Heights home

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas firefighters rushed to a home on Harmony Ave. after several people called 911 to report a house fire on Monday afternoon.

Flames could be seen behind the house, and were shooting through the roof a short time later. Firefighters said it took about a half hour to bring the fire under control.

Investigators think the fire started on a back patio near the ground, ran up a wall and got into the attic.
