The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade 20th Anniversary

Residents of Summerlin are invited to show off their patriotic spirit with their red, white and blue colors at the Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade taking place Friday, July 4. Celebrating 20 years, the Patriotic Parade features more than 70 entries including marching bands, floats, giant Macy's-style inflatable balloons and children's favorite storybook and cartoon characters.

Officials heed warnings as early heat wave hits the West

Parts of the Western U.S. are getting an early taste of scorching summer heat, forcing officials in California, Oregon and desert Southwest states to heed the warnings of dangerous, triple-digit temperatures in this first week of June.

Organizers rescheduled California's state track and field championship events to start in the evening hours on Friday and Saturday.

Marching bands have asked officials with the Portland Rose Festival in Oregon if they can take off their hats and change their uniforms during judged performances to help stay cool over the weekend.

The severity of the forecast is also putting the area around Southern Nevada under an excessive heat warning, from Las Vegas to the California and Arizona borders. ... Read More

Calling all parents: CCSD offers survey to get parents' opinions on key topics

Attention parents: CCSD needs your opinion. Safety, academics, and school climate are among the many topics that are the focus of the 2016 Clark County School District's Parent Survey.

The 10-minute survey, available in English and Spanish, is confidential and part of the district's efforts to engage the community on important issues facing students and their families.

"With parent engagement being one of the district's Pledge of Achievement success indicators, the annual survey continues to be an important opportunity for us to hear from and listen to what parents think about their child's school and the district as a whole," said Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky. 1 killed in fire near Spring Mountain and Buffalo

Clark County Fire and Rescue investigated a deadly fire late Monday morning, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

The fire at the apartment complex near the intersection of S. Buffalo Drive and W. Spring Mountain Road started just before 11:30 a.m.

There weren't any other details released. Fire officials are still investigating.

IKEA's grand opening doesn't disappoint

Wednesday was the day many valley residents had been waiting on for a long time, but now the wait is over, and IKEA is now open to the home good lovers far and wide.

When the store opened its doors near the 215 and South Durango, customers flocked to the warehouse by the thousands! Some people had even been camped out since Monday. Many of them shopped, paid, left, and returned for round two.

Junie Zhu was the first person in line when the doors opened at 9 a.m.

"We got the lounge chair, and then we're going to go home and take a shower and then come back the next day," Zhu said.

For many people, it was their first time shopping at IKEA.

Customers camp out in front of IKEA ahead of big opening

The new Las Vegas IKEA opens on Wednesday, but there are already people waiting in line. The store will be in the southwest part of the valley near Durango and the 215.

It rained in the valley Tuesday, but the tents were pitched, so the rain and wind didn't stop the eager consumers.

"I was a little cold this morning, but we're okay. We got lots of blankets, and we got hot coffee this morning, so we're good," according to Krystel Vargas, who was the first person in line.
