Pillowcases Provide Comfort To Children Facing Serious Illness

Close to 100 brightly colored pillowcases were delivered to clients of the Children's Specialty Center of Nevada on Thursday.

The event coincided with a visit from Cindy Kerr of ConKerrCancer.org.  Kerr's non profit organization is responsible for more than 300,000 personalized pillowcases sent around the world to children facing life threatening illnesses. Kerr started making the pillowcases when her son was being treated for cancer in the hospital to help combat the generic hospital atmosphere. In addition, Kerr, along with her daughter Katie wrote the book 'A Case For Adventure" which highlights the story of a cancer patient, George, who embarks on wonderful journeys inspired by magical pillowcases.

"The level of participation was remarkable. We received hundreds of essays from students on how they use our growing transit system, bicycling amenities and other environmentally friendly services to reduce our carbon footprint," RTC General Manager Jacob Snow said.

The essay contest was open to all high school seniors graduating in 2011. Each essay was judged equally on its content and the quality of the writing.

Police Search for Individual After Lengthy Standoff

LAS VEGAS -- For at least eight hours, Metro Police officers didn't know if a man they believed barricaded himself inside a northeast valley home was actually inside.

"We don't know if the subject is injured or if someone else perhaps may have been involved that they were injured, but at this time, we do not know whose blood it is," said Metro Police Officer Jay Rivera.

Metro took no chances. Armed officers and armored SWAT vehicles quickly surrounded the home near Sahara Avenue and Sloan Lane. Police took their time, playing it safe.

"This has to be done slow and methodical," Rivera said. "There's no need to rush in. We're going to do things on our terms. As long as they're safe, that's the way we're going to do it. Sometimes, it can take longer, but in the long run, we'd rather go, be here for a long time and make sure that no one gets hurt, including the suspect."
