LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas homicide detectives had an 83-percent solve rate in 2009. In all, they arrested suspects in 107 out of 121 murders.

Police saw a 10-percent drop in murders from 2008 to 2009, down 36 from the peak in 2006. Still, police have 14 unsolved murders on their books for 2009. In each case, police have few suspects and even fewer leads.

  • On January 10, 2009, police were called to the area of Lake Mead and Pabco Road after getting reports of a man down. When they arrived, they found 34-year-old Ambrosio Lizarraga dead from a gunshot wound to the torso. Police have no leads into Lizarraga's death.
  • 16-year-old Aric Brill died after being shot at a house party. Brill and a friend were confronted by the suspect at the party. As the two tried to leave, the suspect produced two guns and shot both of them. They were transported to UMC where Brill later died. No arrests have been made.
  • On April 6, 2009, police were called to the area of Craig and Puebla after getting calls of a shots fired and a man down in the area. When they arrived, they found 18-year-old Jose Jimenez with a gunshot wound to the head.
  • On April 8, 2009, police were called to a traffic accident involving a pedestrian. Police say 22-year-old Juan Mejia-Hernandez had been intentionally ran over after a road rage incident. Mejia-Hernandez was transported to the UMC Trauma Center and died on April 10, 2009.
  • On April 14, 2009, a female called 911 saying she had returned home and found her husband dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Metro Police Officers were sent to the scene and found 27-year-old Aaron White dead.
  • Police are looking for the person who murdered 26-year-old Francisco Alvarez. Police say Alvarez was shot to death early in the morning of June 29. Officers found Alvarez dead in a car while investigating another shooting.
  • Police are looking for the people responsible for the murder 38-year-old Kevin Franchow. Detectives believe Franchow was walking in Ansan Park in the morning of July 29, 2009 when two men tried to rob him. Franchow was deaf and police believe he could not understand what the suspects were asking for.
  • On the night of July 26, 2009, Las Vegas police responded to the 2500 Block of Poppy Lane to investigate a shooting. When officers arrived, they found 40-year-old Eric Fuentes Sanchez inside an apartment dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
  • Las Vegas police are looking for the person who killed a homeless man. The badly-beaten body of 41-year-old James Mendola was found near Desert Inn and US-95.
  • Metro Police are investigating the shooting death of 31-year-old Ovarius Everson. Police were called of shots fired and found Everson dead.
  • 43-year-old Keith Moon was found stabbed to death in a home near Spencer and Wigwam. No other details have been released.
  • 40-year-old Arbuary Fuller was shot and killed while returning with his kids from a night of trick or treating. Arbuary spent the evening with his seven kids before being shot in front of his apartment. He was taken to University Medical Center where he later died.
  • 37-year-old Karriem Shelby interrupted a home-invasion robbery at his apartment near Arville and Desert Inn. Police say Shelby scuffled with the robbers before he was shot and killed.
  • The body of 31-year-old Antonio Garcia, Jr. was found in the trunk of a burning car near Cheyenne and Lamb. He had been shot in the head.
