Three Square Opens New Food Stamps Help Center

Nevada Senator Harry Reid helped commemorate the opening Tuesday of the new Three Square Center.

The center is for people looking for help with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which is referred to as food stamps. Workers at the center will help people fill out applications for the program.

In 2008, more than 144,000 people in Nevada received SNAP benefits compared with more than 354,000 in 2012, according to the Department of Agriculture. The average monthly benefit for individuals in 2012 in Nevada is $123.35, the USDA reports. For households, the benefit was $258.81.

Three Square Food Bank already collects and distributes food to food banks around southern Nevada. According to the nonprofit, it currently provides more than 24.5 million pounds of food and grocery product to its charity partners every year.
