Two Days Planned for Veterans Stand Down

The community will be coming together Wednesday and Thursday to help homeless veterans. The annual Veterans Stand Down event will take place at the East Las Vegas Senior Community Center, 250 N. Eastern Avenue. The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., both days.

U.S. VETS is sponsoring the event. It offers the men and women who served but are now homeless a chance to get the resources they need to get back on their feet. Local nonprofits which offer both temporary and long-term help will be there. Representatives from Veterans Affairs will be there along with people from the legal system. Staff members from the offices of Nevada’s Congressional delegation will be there to help veterans get their military records.

The event is not just about getting services. Veterans will also be able to get showers, hair cuts and hygiene items from Goodwill.

Free and low-cost breast cancer screenings will be offered at local Food 4 Less stores throughout 2012.

Food 4 Less has teamed up with Nevada Health Centers to offer low- to no-cost breast mammograms at selected Food 4 Less locations through the Centers’ Mammovan program.

The Nevada Health Center Mammovan is a mobile mammography van designed to travel to underserved areas of the state to provide mammogram screenings to geographically isolated and/or uninsured women who otherwise might not seek out the service on their own.

The program was made possible in part from a $10,000 grant from Food 4 Less to Nevada Health Centers.

The Mammovan will be offering breast cancer screenings at the following Food 4 Less locations throughout the year:

Students Receive Early Holiday

Students Receive Early Holiday

Kids at one southern Nevada elementary school got an early holiday thanks to the generosity of  the Las Vegas Hospitality Association.

The organization delivered more than 200 bags of gifts to Manuel J. Cortez Elementary School Thursday for their annual Bags of Cheer event. The bags were customized for the children with shoes, shirts, toothbrushes, and other holiday goodies. This is the third year in a row that the tourism industry group has stepped in to help kids at the school.

The group worked with the teachers and staff at the school to make sure the kids who needed help were on the list. This year the LVHA added a party that included face painting, balloon sculptures and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus.

“For some of these students, this is the only Christmas gifts they receive,” LVHA president J.J. Wills said.
