Make A Difference Day at Walter Long Elementary | News
LAS VEGAS -- Parents, educators and community volunteers rolled up their sleeves today for a great cause.
The non-profit Caesars Foundation kicked off a year long transformation of Walter V. Long Elementary School.
Volunteers and parents cleaned up the school grounds and building, including repainting murals and all of the benches.
Caesars Foundation through its work with Teach for America, a nonprofit focused on eliminating educational inequality in at-risk schools, "adopted" Walter V. Long Elementary School.
The commitment includes monthly PTA meetings, mentoring and tutoring for students plus parental job training and placement for parents.
"They're going to give our parents scholarships to go to back to school, English Second Language classes and anything they need to get back to work," Danielle Rayos said.
Rayos is a teacher and says investing in parents creates a stable, focused student.
Walter V. Long is a Title I school which means many students live in poverty; and are at-risk of falling behind because of it.
Caesars believes this project is proof that failure is not an option.
