Police: 4 people killed in 4 separate crashes, 1 hit-and-run

LAS VEGAS-- Saturday into Sunday proved to be a deadly night on the roads around the valley.  Metro Police said they investigated four different crashes that killed four people.

Those incidents made the total amount of fatal crashes in Metro's jurisdiction this year reach 75.

The most recent crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on East Charleston Boulevard near East Frank Street.  Officers said witnesses, along with evidence at the scene suggest a dark gray vehicle, possibly a Dodge Charger, was traveling eastbound in the right lane of Charleston Boulevard when it struck a bicyclist that was traveling in that same lane.

The driver didn't stop, according to police. The bicyclist, who's identity will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office, died at the scene.

Another fatal crash happened at 12:55 a.m. on S. Maryland Parkway south of E. Canosa Avenue. Witness told police a 2002 Nissan Xterra was traveling south on Maryland Pkwy when it struck Jenny Chavez of Las Vegas.

Officers said the 56-year-old was crossing the roadway from east to west outside of a crosswalk when she was hit. Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel. Officers said the operator of the Nissan remained at the scene.

The next crash Metro worked happened at 12:30 a.m. on Sahara Avenue west of Sloan Lane.  Police said a 2008 Toyota Avalon was driving fast eastbound on Sahara when the driver lost control of the car while going around a curve.

The Toyota spun out and towards a concrete center median, and the front right side of the Toyota hit a metal light pole, officers said.

Traffic investigators said the impact forced the entire passenger side of the car to be removed.  They said the passenger was thrown from the vehicle and the car didn't stop until it was 100 feet away from the light pole.

Police said the driver of the Toyota fled the scene of the crash on foot. The front seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two passengers in the back seat of the car were taken to Sunrise Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries.  As for the driver, police said he was later found near his home by Metro officers.

He was arrested for fleeing the scene.

On Sands Avenue west of Howard Hughes Parkway, police said a 2002 Cadillac was going eastbound in the outside lane at 10:38 p.m., when a pedestrian wearing dark colored clothing crossed from the north to south outside of a marked crosswalk.

The driver struck the pedestrian, who's identity hasn't been released, but officers said the driver stayed at the scene waiting for them to arrive and did not seem to be impaired.

The pedestrian was taken to Sunrise Trauma Center and they died.  Identity of the victim will come from the Clark County Coroner's Office.
