1 person killed in crash on Gowan

LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police investigated a deadly crash involving a 23-year-old man Saturday night.

Officers said the collision at Gowan Road and New Horizon Avenue happened around 10:29 p.m. when the driver, 23-year old Jaime Lopez, was traveling eastbound on Gowan Road.

Lopez, who was driving a 1992 Honda Civic, failed to stay in his own lane and ran off the road onto the shoulder, according to police.

Officers said Lopez then re-entered the roadway, crossed the westbound lane of Gowan and ran off the road again, but this time over a curb. The passenger side of the vehicle then struck a fixed, wooden power post causing life threatening injuries to the front passenger, 20-year-old Marcos Luna.

Luna was taken to University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Lopez, was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

There was a passenger in the back seat, but police said he refused to get medical attention.

This was the 78th traffic related fatality in LVMPD's jurisdiction in 2014.
