Man Injured in Industrial Accident

NORTH LAS VEGAS – An industrial accident at the Republic Services facility near Gowan and Commerce sent a man to the hospital Friday morning.

Police and fire units responded to the facility at 11:20 a.m. to investigate reports of a serious accident. The injured man was transported to University Medical Center, and his condition is unknown.

According to an employee, the facility is a recycling plant where bottles, tin cans, newspapers are brought to and sorted. He says it can be dangerous, especially with the piles of material.

Workers were sent home for the day and OSHA is investigating.

Culinary Academy of Las Vegas' Summer Food Program

The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas has announced it will offer free food to children at 19 locations over the summer months. Last year, the academy prepared 2,300 meals a day. The meals are free to children between the ages of 2 to 18, Monday through Friday.

Child on Bicycle Struck by Car

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- A 12-year-old boy was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning.

The boy was on a bicycle when he was hit around 7:30 a.m. at Goldfield Street and Tropical Parkway. The child was briefly pinned under the mini-van. Police say witnesses to the collision used a jack to lift the vehicle off the child. Police say the boy suffered a head injury.

This is the second incident this morning involving a child being struck by a car. Another 12-year-old suffered minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Fern Lane, near Sloan Lane and Sahara Avenue. That child was transported to the hospital for a minor knee injury. That collision happened around 7 a.m.

Vacant Building Catches on Fire on Boulder Highway

LAS VEGAS -- Clark County Firefighters responded to reports of an explosion and fire at 3675 Boulder Highway near Sahara Avenue around 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters arrived on scene and saw heavy smoke and flames coming from a vacant building.

Once in position, firefighters began a defensive attack on the fire using as much as 3000 gallons of water per minute.

Firefighters believe the property had been occupied illegally by homeless people. Fire officials urge residents to notify the police they suspect vacant property is being occupied.

The damage estimate is $45,000.

There were no injuries reported.

Excessive Heat Warning Issued In Clark County

LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas valley is expected to reach triple-digit temperatures today. Clark County officials have issued an excessive heat warning from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The record temperature for this date is 107 degrees and today's temperature is expected to be near that record-high mark.

The county has opened several cooling stations to the public in an effort to move the homeless and other individuals out of the heat and keep them hydrated.

Triple-digit temperatures are expected for the entire weekend.

Summer Brings Overcrowding at Local Animal Shelters

LAS VEGAS - Pamela Jenkins returned home after Memorial Day weekend to a double punch.

"It was horrifying to get home from a weekend away and to find out the dog got out, and it was missing. But number two, you go to pick it up, and the dog's dead," she said.

Jenkikns had her dog Tora for five years. On Monday, Tora was euthanized at the Lied Animal Shelter. He was brought there after being found by a neighbor.

"I almost fainted in the middle of the Animal Foundation. My dog was euthanized?" she said. "I was the closest with Tora out of all my dogs. We have two girl dogs and a boy dog. I had rescued him from a bad situation, from a home that couldn't keep him when he was just about two years old."

Authority Figures Accused in Separate Sexual Assault Cases

LAS VEGAS - For the second time this week, an authority figure is accused of sexually assaulting a young girl. An ROTC advisor and a Metro Police officer are accused in unrelated cases of abusing their authority and taking advantage of young victims.

The two young ladies came forward this week with separate allegations of sexual abuse against the two men. Kevin Miyasato with the Community Crisis Center of Southern Nevada says the victims at some point probably felt hopeless.

"Very, very violated - their whole world has been turned upside down. Everything they knew and trusted in has been broken apart," he speculated. "Things they used to enjoy doing, they're not doing anymore. They've basically emotionally shut down. Those are some signs and indications that something's going on."
