Driver arrested in fatal hit-and-run in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Police have arrested a driver who they say was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed a pedestrian in Las Vegas early Sunday morning.

Investigators say Ismael Moreno, 49, was on East Sahara Avenue outside a crosswalk when he was struck by a pickup truck around 3:25 a.m.

The pedestrian was knocked down and pronounced dead at the scene. 

The driver fled the scene in what witnesses described as a small, two-door pickup with white paint and a damaged left headlamp.

According to police, the attorney of a woman identified as Samantha McLeod, 24, contacted police Sunday afternoon and McLeod was booked into Clark County Detention Center on a felony hit and run charge.



Mexican consulate to issue birth certificates

LAS VEGAS -- Mexican nationals living in Nevada can now get birth certificates at the consulate instead of traveling back to Mexico.

The consulate launched the "Act now and Apply for your Birth Certificate" program Thursday.

Right now the office is taking walk-ins, but starting in February, you will have to make an appointment.

To get a copy of the birth certificate, you must appear in person at any consular office with a valid ID and provide what's known as a CURP form. 

The cost is $13.

Police investigate body found in wash

 LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police are investigating the discovery of a body in a wash in the northeast part of the valley.

The body was found shortly before noon near Lone Mountain Road and Lamb Boulevard. 

Police say the death does not appear to be suspicious, but they are still investigating.

Trimming palm trees turns deadly for 2 men

LAS VEGAS -- A tree trimmer killed over the weekend was the second one in less than a month to die after becoming stuck in palm fronds.

The Clark County coroner says 43-year-old Daniel Wynn Smith died after he became stuck in palm fronds Sunday afternoon. Last month, a another man died after firefighters say he got trapped and suffocated removing fronds from a palm tree.

Older untrimmed palm trees pose the most risk. 

"I just saw leaves and brush coming down and then I noticed a guy was up there cutting," said neighbor Jay Akins.





Woman driver arrested for DUI after hitting jaywalking boy

 LAS VEGAS -- A woman was arrested for DUI after her car struck a 10-year-old boy near Owens Avenue and Lamb Boulevard on Monday, Metro Police said.

Mara Swenson is facing charges in the 3:30 p.m. crash that left the boy with a serious injury. Police said the child was not in a marked crosswalk.

PD: Boy was jaywalking when hit by car in east Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - A 10-year-old boy suffered serious injuries Monday after a vehicle hit him near Owens Avenue and Lamb Boulevard.

The crash happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. Police say a Lincoln Navigator was traveling west on Owens near Linnbaker Lane, when the boy and another juvenile crossed Owens. Police say the juveniles were not in a marked crosswalk.

Police say the driver of the Lincoln tried to avoid them, but struck the 10-year-old. The other juvenile fled the area.

Emergency crews took the boy to University Medical Center in serious condition. Police say the driver of the Lincoln remained on scene and was arrested for suspected DUI.

Man hospitalized after fire in northeast Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- An early morning fire sent one person to the hospital, according to Clark County Fire and Rescue.

The fire at 5851 Meikle Lane started at 6:50 a.m. and the first CCFD unit arrived at the scene at 6:54 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters saw a fully involved single family home.

The fire was knocked down in 20 minutes, but CCFD found the victim by the back door while searching the residence.

The man apparently had an injury to the back of his head. He was taken to the hospital where he had surgery. He is in critical condition.

A total of 36 firefighters fought the blaze.

Metro is working with CCFD investigators to determine the cause of the fire. It is undetermined at this time.
