LAS VEGAS -- The family of a man killed while riding his bike across a busy intersection is in despair and searching for answers.

Joseph William Galterio's mother, sister and other family members visited the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Pecos Road where Galterio was struck and killed Tuesday.

They wonder if his death could have been prevented.

"He's been suffering from Tinnitus for a long time. I don't know if that was the cause. He wasn't thinking, wasn't aware of what he was doing. I can't believe he just shot through a stop sign," said Josephine Galterio, his mother.

He was her youngest son. She said he suffered from ringing of the ears, or Tinnitus.

Galterio crossed Charleston at Pecos on his bike after visiting his girlfriend. His cousin Jeannette Arnone says he'd ride his bike all the time, but this time he didn't make it home to his mother's house.

Clark County fire crews responded to a fire at a vacant home on Lake Mead Boulevard near Toiyabe Street Friday morning.

The department started getting calls about the fire at about 7:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire showing from the home. They were able to bring the fire under control in about six minutes.

According to the department, this is the third fire that crews have been to at this home in the past several months. Fire investigators are not able to determine the exact cause of this blaze because of the damage from the other fires. However, fire officials believe it was started by a fire built to keep people warm or by smoking materials.

The house is very old and has been used by homeless people for shelter in the past.

The county issued a notice of abatement to the property owners. The building department will assess the stability of the home. The property owners may be required to demolish the home.
