Cats With Extra Toes Available for Adoption

The Animal Foundation is offering a deep discount through Monday for people looking to adopt a cat.

The shelter has reached its capacity for cats at its two adoption centers and is offering people $2 off the adoption fee per toe of the cat they are interested in adopting.

While the deal sounds strange, the shelter has received a number of cats with extra toes, otherwise known as polydactyl cats.

Most cats have a total of 18 toes, five on their front paws and four on their back paws. Polydactyl cats have extra toes, usually on their front paws. They are sometimes referred to as Hemingway cats, because Ernest Hemingway's home in Key West was home to dozens of cats with extra toes.

Right now, the shelter has 30 cats with extra toes up for adoption. The deal for those cats is available through the end of business hours Monday. Other cats without extra toes are also available for adoption.

The cats are available for adoption at the Animal Foundation's main campus, 655 North Mojave Road, which is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, or at the PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center at 286 West Lake Mead Parkway from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
